West Branch and community were grieved last Friday at the passing of Albert Phelps a respected and highly esteemed resident of the community for many years. Mr. Phelps had been in failing health for nearly two years, and all that loving hands could do, proved to no avail.

Albert Phelps was born near Alliance, Ohio, on January 27, 1858 and passed away at his home northeast of Springdale, Iowa, on July 22, 1927.

He was the son of James and Hannah Hurst Phelps, one of a family of six, three brothers and two sisters--George, William A., Carrie Millett, Charles and Annie, who died in childhood. Of these only his elder sister, Mrs. Carrie Phelps Millett survives him.

As a lad of eight years he came from Ohio with his father's family. They settled and lived for many years on a farm adjoining his late home.

On January 27, 1885, he was united in marriage to Nettie Kennedy. To this union were born two daughters, Eva and Lura. Eva Phelps Barnhart, the elder, preceded him to the bright beyond on March 14, 1924. Lura, the second daughter, and Nettie, his wife, together with two grandsons, Ivan and Harold Barnhart, his sister Carrie, and other relatives are left to mourn the loss of a devoted father, a loving husband, brother and grandfather.

He was a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Springdale. As his bodily strength diminished his faith increased and was a great comfort to him as the end drew near.

He was always fond of the children and young people, and kept young in spirit. He was thoughtful of his family and deeply appreciated his home. He was known as a genial, loyal friend to a large circle of acquaintances, who also will cherish his memory.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church of Springdale at three o'clock Sunday afternoon, July 24, by Rev. W. C. Perdew. Mr. Lars Hanson of Springdale also spoke at the service. The body was laid to rest in the Beautiful City of the Dead at West Branch, Iowa.
