21 April 1927 - West Branch Times

The community was shocked and grieved yesterday morning to learn of the sudden death of Sherman Teets, who was stricken with apoplexy and died at 12:45 Wednesday morning. He had been in usual health, except for the fact that he had recently had an attack of flu, and his death was entirely unexpected.

Mr. Teets enjoyed a wide acquaintance and a large circle of friends. He came here about fifteen years ago and was town marshal at the time of his death, a position which he had held for ten years. His familiar figure, directing traffic, will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 o'clock this afternoon (Thursday) at the Otto Hill home. The body will be taken to Peru, Iowa, for burial beside Mrs. Teets.

28 April 1927 - West Branch Times

William Sherman Teets, the eldest son of William and Elizabeth Teets, was born at Grandview, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1866. He passed away April 19, 1927, at West Branch, where he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Otto Hill.

On Jan. 18, 1893, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Belle Esmoil. To this union three children were born, two dying in infancy. When first married they lived in the vicinity of Muscatine, later moving to Truro, Iowa, where his wife passed away 23 years ago.

For the past 15 years he has resided in West Branch, where he was officially employed.

The town officers and committees have expressed and extended their appreciation to the family by the following sentiments:

"'Sherm' as we knew him, will be greatly missed by all. He rendered a service that few men have the tact to render. He was never offensive, always kind, even when it became his duty to enforce the law. He rendered faithful service to our town for many years, meeting the public day after day, and while it fell to his lot to perform many unpleasant tasks, he performed them in a manner that commanded respect and admiration, and it was while in the performance of his duties that the final summons came.

He was especially loved by the children, they respected him, obeyed him and loved him, this love and respect, he had won and held, with kindness. He knew them all, he loved them all, he looked after them all while they were on the streets, he was father to them all and will be greatly missed by them, which is the finest tribute that can be paid his memory."

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Otto Hill, her husband, four grandchildren, Ethel Irene, Emily Marie, Jean Elizabeth and Sherman Ernest; one sister, Mrs. Belle Beckey of Grandview, Iowa; two half sisters, Mrs. Harry Buck of Albia, Iowa, and Miss Nettie Teets of Oakdale, Iowa; one half brother, John Teets, of Peru, Iowa, where the remains were taken and laid beside his wife.

Funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hill, Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. C. Perdew and Rev. A. J. Hansen. The journey was then made to Peru, Iowa, where funeral services where held at the Methodist church, at two o'clock Friday afternoon, and the body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in the Ebenezer cemetery.

Those accompanying the remains were Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hill, Mrs. Belle Beckey and son Harry of Grandview, Chas. Toyne of Atalissa and Mrs. Josephine Dick of Independence, Iowa.
