22 March 1900 - West Branch Times

At his home near Centerdale, Iowa, on the 6th day of this month departed this life in the hope of a blessed immortality, the subject of this sketch.

He was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1830; in 1849 was married and came to Philadelphia, remaining there about ten years, then came to Iowa, and about thirty-five years ago settled on the farm where he died, and where he raised a large family, among whom is Mr. John J. Gamble, for years a prominent business man at Oxford, but who, when his father became infirm, returned to the homestead where he now lives.

In 1893 the good wife crossed the river and since that time, the bereaved husband has been waiting to rejoin the partner of his life. Coming from a long line of Scottish ancestry, Samuel Gamble was proud of the race so justly celebrated in history, romance and poetry. He was a devout adherent of the Presbyterian church, at which, when able, he was a constant attendant and to the support of which he was a generous contributor.

His genial and sunny disposition, his fair and honorable dealings, and his broad and liberal views attracted to him a large circle of friends, not only in the county of his residence but in surrounding counties.

He was buried at Downey and to his grave followed a large concourse of men and women, who liked and loved one of the pioneers who helped to make Iowa the great and grand state that it is. --State Press
