22 June 1899 - West Branch Times

Died, Wednesday, June 21, 1899, at his home in this city, Thomas S. Gruwell, aged 59 years, 9 month and 9 days. His last illness was of short duration, although his health for several years had been more or less affected by despeptic troubles, yet no immediate danger was apparent until about ten days before his death, when his suffering became intense.

He was a peaceful quiet citizen, a kind neighbor and a consistent member of the M.E. church. He leaves a wife and three children to bear the irretrievable loss of a careful and affectionate husband and a loving father.

Thomas Stanley Gruwell, was born at Marlboro, Stark county, Ohio, in 1839, and in 1853 emigrated with his parents to Honey Grove, Cedar county, Iowa, which has been his almost continuous home ever since. He was married in 1863 to Amanda Reeves, who now so sadly bids adieu to that loving companionship of nearly 36 years. Their sons, Rev. Elmer T., of Coggon, Ia., Calvin M., and Clarence, are all present. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Coates this afternoon at 2:30 in the M.E. church.

There being just six resident first cousins of deceased, viz: Brinton T. Clark and W. W. Gruwell; Robinson, William and Nathan Heacock, they were chosen as pall bearers.
