20 January 1898 - The Tipton Advertiser

Another of Cedar county's old has settlers gone. Mrs. Anna Smith died last Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Susan Thiele, in Downey, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 8 months and five days.

Mrs. Smith came to Iowa with her husband, Albert G. Smith, in 1839, and settled on a farm east of Downey where she resided until fourteen years ago. She lived in this place from that time until her death. Mrs. Smith was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1805. She was married at Philadelphia in 1836, and was left a widow in 1849. She left four children, all of whom were present at her funeral.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Walley, of Maxwell, Iowa, assisted by Rev. E. S. Brown of Downey. The text was taken from Isiah: 26-3. "Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose minds stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee." Mrs. Smith united with the Presbyterian church when quite young; later became a member of the Scott Presbyterian church, often walking five and one-half miles to attend the church of her choice. The early settlers here and of West Branch know of her kindness.
