Byron Hawley was born Feb. 10, 1852 in Stark Co., Ohio. He removed with his parents to Cedar county, Iowa in May of that year. After finishing his education in the West Branch school he was a drug clerk for a number of years. He returned to the farm and in 1879 united in marriage with Lou Yetter who passed from this life in May 1887. To this union one child was born, Earl M. On August 18, 1889 he was married to Anna Thomas. To this union one child was born, Harold T. They moved to Boulder, Colorado in July 1902 on account of his failing health which seemed to help him but little. He gradually grew worse until the time of his death which occurred Saturday morning November 14, 1914. He was a devoted member of the M.E. church for a number of years. He was member of the Wapsinonoc Lodge and for some time served as master. He was also a member of the Modern Woodman.

During his long sickness he was cheerful and seemed to be ready and willing when the call would come to a higher and better country where sickness never comes. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Mitchell Thursday at 2 p.m. from the M.E. church. Interment in the West Branch cemetery.
