18 April 1895 - The Tipton Advertiser

DIED SHAFFER--At the home of his mother, in Tipton, Sunday, April 14th, Goodman S. Shaffer, aged 19 years and 10 months.

The deceased was young, apparently in excellent health, genial and buoyant, and the announcement of his death came like a shock to his friends and to the community. His serious sickness was only of a few days duration, and the immediate cause of death was edema of the glottis.

He was the son of John B. and Mary J. Shaffer. His father died four or five years ago. Goodman attended school at Notre Dame, Ind., and one term in the law department of the State University. For several months past he had been employed as a compositor in the Conservative office. Last winter during a series of meetings at the M.E. church he united with the church, since which time he has taken much interest in Church, Sunday School and Epworth League.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the M.E. church and was very largely attended. Company M, of which he was a member, attended in a body, as did also the Epworth League. The services were very appropriate and impressive. On behalf of the Epworth League Herbert Dorcas spoke feelingly concerning their departed member. He was followed by Earl Wallick, who read a paper by Mrs. Gilmore, the Sunday School teacher of the class to which he belonged. The paper was a splendid tribute to his devotion as a Sunday school scholar. Mr. Gould's sermon was very appropriate, and referred to the conversion of the deceased and his enthusiasm in religion, and to the fact that he died on Easter, the resurrection day of our Lord.

The floral offerings were very beautiful, coming from the family, the Epworth League, the Sunday school class, from Company M, and the Conservative office. The pall bearers were Frank Gunsolus, Harry Walters, Harry Smith, Charles Miller, Fred Deeds and E. R. Bailey. Company M escorted the remains to the cemetery at Pleasant Prairie and fired a salute and the bugle sounded taps at the grave.
