26 May 1927 - The Tipton Advertiser

The Santa Ana Daily Register, of Saturday, May 14, carried an account of the death of Mrs. Mary Sutton, former Tipton resident widely known in Cedar county. Mrs. Sutton had reached the advanced age of nearly 100 years, and an unusual feature in connection with her death is that she was the mother of a Civil War veteran, S. W. (Wes) Sutton. Few Civil War mothers have lived so far in the twentieth century. Her death occurred May 13.

"Mrs. Mary Sutton, 99, mother of Mrs. S. H. Collins, S. W. Sutton and Oscar Sutton of Santa Ana, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Collins, 1636 East Fourth street, yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Sutton would have been 100 years old on June 29, had she lived. She was born in New York state on June 9, 1827. After spending her childhood in New York, she moved with her family to Iowa when a young woman and lived their most of her life.

After several visits to California she came here almost 12 years ago to make her home and has been living with her daughter since that time.

Besides the children she leaves in Santa Ana, she also is survived by a son, W. H. Sutton, of Boone, Iowa, and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel C. Wilson of Alhambra. Mrs. Fred H. Taylor, Santa Ana, was a granddaughter.

Mrs. Sutton was probably the only living great-great grandmother living in Santa Ana. The five generations were represented by Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Wilson, her daughter, Mrs. Helen Wilson Neiger, her great granddaughter, and Mrs. Neiger's young daughter, Betty Neiger.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in Fairhaven cemetery."
