7 May 1914 - West Branch Times

Edward Rich, son of the late Francis B. Rich of this place, died Sunday, May 2, in Arizona, where he had gone for relief from his direful malady, consumption. Death came suddenly, before any of his relatives could reach him. Owing to the distant location of his sisters, one in Kansas and one in California, arrangements for the funeral were delayed, and it is not expected that the body will reach West Branch before Monday, where the funeral and burial are expected to take place.

14 May 1914 - West Branch Times

Edward B. Rich, son of Francis B. and Anna B. Rich (both of whom are deceased) was born January 7, 1881, at West Branch, Iowa. He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends and remained of this faith to the end of his life.

In 1901 he went to Garden City, Kansas, to make his home with a sister, Mrs. George H. Mack, where he resided until in the year 1908, when he removed to Idaho Falls, Idaho, engaging in business at that place.

The strenuous labor and close confinement of business life brought on a decline and it was thought necessary for him, in the interest of his health, to give up his business interests and seek a change of climate. He accordingly removed from Idaho Falls and located at Phoenix, Arizona.

This change did not prove of lasting benefit, as had been hoped, and after a protracted period of gradual failing health, he passed to his heavenly home on May 3, 1914, near Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 33 years, 3 months and 6 days.

He was always of a kindly disposition and found great delight in extending aid and comfort to those in need as opportunity offered, thus manifesting the spirit of the Master.

Two sisters survive him, Mrs. George H. Mack of Garden City, Kansas, and Mrs. L. I. Cowgill of San Francisco, Calif., both of whom accompanied the remains to the old home and to its last resting place in the West Branch cemetery.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, May 10th, at 2:30 o'clock at the Downey Street Friends church, and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. L. Ryon.
