26 February 1904 - The Tipton Advertiser

Eliza F. Reed, wife of Dr. J. E. Sansom, died at her home in Tipton Saturday morning, February 27th, after a comparative brief illness. She became seriously ill Sunday of last week but on the day of her death seemed to have passed the crises of her disease. The end, which was no doubt due to heart failure, came suddenly and without the slightest warning. The funeral conducted by her pastor Rev. Parsons, was held at the family residence on Monday afternoon. It was largely attended and was characterized with such simplicity as was in keeping with Mrs. Sansom's oft expressed sentiment in regard to such matters.

Eliza Reed was born February 28, 1848, in Bradford county, Pa. The family removed to Iowa in 1855 and located on a farm near Cedar Rapids. Shortly thereafter the father died and the young girl was left a partial orphan. She was ambitious to acquire an education and succeeded in obtaining it. She was graduated from Coe Institute, Cedar Rapids, and after graduation taught for several years in the public schools of Mason City and Marshalltown. She was united in marriage to Dr. J. E. Sansom in 1880. Their only child, Anna May, was born in 1882. In 1889 Dr. Sansom located in Tipton and except for an absence of a few years has practiced his profession in this city since that time.

Mrs. Sansom was essentially a home woman, intensely devoted to her home, her husband and her daughter. She was a rare character, brave, generous, noble minded, loyal to every conviction. Her standards of life and duty were very high. None knew her but to honor her; and whoever was privileged to know her intimately loved her. Her generousity was limited only by her means.

During the last few months she had devoted herself assiduously to her husband, whose serious illness caused her great anxiety. Dr. Sansom was in a hospital at Iowa City when her illness became acute and he was summoned from his couch of pain to what proved to be his wife's death bed.

Death under any circumstances is sad enough, under the conditions now present in this stricken home it is tragic.
