21 February 1924 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Mattie Stuart had a narrow escape from serious if not fatal injuries last Saturday morning. When she lit the oil stove the match head dropped on her gown and before she realized what had happened she was wrapped in flames. Her face, neck and one hand were very badly burned, but she received prompt medical attention and is doing as well as could be expected.

In last week's Times we made mention of the accident which befell Mrs. Mattie Stewart when her clothing became ignited from a flying match with which she was lighting the oil stove. Mrs. Stewart's face, neck and hand were badly burned, but at no time early in the week was her condition considered as particularly dangerous.

On Thursday, however, she was unable to leave her bed, but the end came rather suddenly, early Saturday morning when she quietly passed away.

Mrs. Stewart's death was a shock to the entire community and she will be greatly missed. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Friends church.

Mattie Graham McClellan was born in Mendon, Michigan, June 17, 1851, and came with her parents to Johnson county, Iowa, when but 10 years of age.

In 1884 she was married to Nelson E. Stewart and after her marriage made her home in Michigan where her husband passed away only four years later. Then after the husbands death she returned to Iowa, making her home in West Branch with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. McClellan, so long as they lived and after they passed away. She continued to reside in this place until the time of her own demise, Feb. 23, 1924.

Two children were born to her and her husband, a son and daughter, both of whom, as well as husband and parents preceded her in death.

When but a girl she united with the M.E. church and later became a member of the Presbyterian church of which her honored father was a ruling elder for more than 30 years. When the Presbyterian church of West Branch ceased she cast in her lot with the Friends church of West Branch, of which she was a member at the time of her death. She was always a steady going, quiet, trustworthy, faithful, devoted member of the church, as well as affectionate daughter, mother, friend and neighbor. Her end came quickly but found her in readiness for the change.

She leaves to mourn her removal one grandson, Edwin McClellan, and some cousins of whom are Eugene Cherry, H. L. McClelland and Alpha Ohl.

So in the words of our Savior when speaking in commendation of Mary we may say, "She hath done what she could", and now the reward of the Father's home is her inheritance.

Funeral services were held from Friends church Sunday afternoon. Rev. G. H. Furniss, a former pastor, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. W. H. Wilson. Burial was made in the cemetery on the hill.
