Howard Rhoads, son of Charles and Ida Jane Statler Rhoads, was born on April 18, 1908, at Mechanicsville, Iowa. He received his elementary and high school education in Mechanicsville, graduating in 1922. He drove a horse drawn school bus. He attended Iowa State University for two years, and then helped farm near Mechanicsville.

Howard was united in marriage to Elouise Gallmeyer on September 15, 1934 at Fairport Harbor, Ohio. They had one son, Cary James Rhoads. They bought and lived on a farm southeast of Mechanicsville until they retired and moved into town in 1967. He worked part time for Farm Service and Maher Electric for several years after retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He was an active member of the United Methodist Men; the Lion's Club, where he served as a director; and the Farm Bureau. They were interested in traveling and going on tours. Howard was a very dedicated person and had a subtle sense of humor.

Howard recently had surgery and came home for a brief time. He was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital on April 14 and passed away on Monday, April 19th, 1982. He reached the age of 79 years and 1 day. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank and Forest.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elouise, and son, Cary James of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; also two grandchildren: Pamela Ann and Jeffrey James; nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Rev. Dick Harberts officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service at the United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville. Mrs. Calvin Robinson was organist and Mrs. Floyd Siver was soloist.

Pallbearers were Claude Mitchell, Ron Jarzombek, Norman Kotz, Leo Miller, William Heneks and Don West.

Honorary pallbearers were Lester Nicoll, John H. Mullan, Nathan Carr, John Paidar and Everett Ferguson.

Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsville. Arrangements were by Horner Funeral Home.
