21 June 1923 - West Branch Times

Winifred Mize was born in Ainsworth, Iowa, September 17, 1895, and passed peacefully away June 17, 1923, in the twilight hours of the day when all the world was going to rest. Most of her childhood was spent in West Branch, Iowa. While in high school, from which she graduated in 1914, she gave her heart to Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Nov. 24, 1915, she was united in marriage with Allison Kirby and the home has been in West Liberty and later in Cedar Rapids. With her husband, Mrs. Kirby had for the last two years been a member of the First Christian church of Cedar Rapids. The illness that finally took her from this world of trouble and death had fastened itself upon her long before it was suspected. Through a long illness she was patient and cheerful. All that loving hands and skill could do did not bring her back to the good health that she hoped for. Mrs. Kirby knew when the end was near and without fear or anxiety she went to be with her Master. Mrs. Kirby lived the gospel of happiness and cheer and in her years, which seem to have been cut short, she gave a wealth of friendship and love. Fraternally she was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. She leaves to mourn their loss and to lift their eyes unto God's hills, her husband, Allison Kirby, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Mize, three sisters Frances and Jean of West Branch, and Mrs. Jessie Macumber of Venice, Calif. There are two brothers Harry of Independence, Ia., and Clell of Minneapolis and many other relatives. If the measure of a life is the friends made, then Winifred Kirby lived well for she leaves a host of friends.

The funeral service was held in the Methodist church at West Branch Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock. The Rev. R. B. Hyten of the First Christian church of Cedar Rapids officiated and Rev. W. G Rowley assisted. Interment was in the Oakridge cemetery at West Liberty, Iowa.
