1 August 1912 - West Branch Times

Joseph, the two year and eight month old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kline, living two miles southwest of Downey, received injuries from the kick of a horse while at play in the barnyard last Wednesday evening, which resulted in his death on Friday evening. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at the Christian church at West Liberty.

The child came to his death in a very sad and unexpected way. He had wandered away from an older brother, who was left to take care of him while his father was milking the cows, and got among the horses in the adjoining lot and was fatally injured, the kick from the horses hoof exposing the brain. All care from medical attendants and kind parents and friends that could be extended was summoned, but to no avail. The parents have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement.
