31 August 1893 - West Branch Times

Mr. John J. Tucker after a short but severe illness, died at the home of his parents near Springdale, on the morning of Aug. 24th, 1893, aged about 20 years.

"He the young and strong who cherished,
Noble longings for the strife--
By the roadside fell, and perished
Weary with the march of life."

Yes, the suffering form is at rest, the ambitious heart nerveless, the ringing voice hushed forever. It is with feeling of heartfelt sorrow we are called upon to note this event, the removal of our young friend from life's pleasures and possibilities in the dawn of his manhood and with so much before him to make living desirable. Born in this vicinity the scenes of his childhood and youth were passed in view of our community where his unusual activity and intelligence, especially during his school days have made him a noted figure. Few who witnessed his graduation in 1892 will never forget the brave and manful way he led his class on that occasion. A dutiful son, a faithful friend, a person of great moral worth he has passed away leaving a void long to be filled. Farewell John the first act in the drama of thy existence is ended and thou hast passed to another whose scenes are unfamiliar to our mortal eyes. There the designs of the Creator will be made more manifest and thou wilt work out those allotted they portion on a far grander scale than any earth could offer. For we firmly believe the fire of the spirit is not quenched in the darkness of the grave but--
That the heavenly father tender
Mindful still and evermore
Fans anew the fading ember,
Bids it light another shore. Josepha.
