4 December 1913 - West Branch Times

Our esteemed friend and citizen, E. C. Tomlinson, who had been in failing health for many months, died at his home in West Branch Friday morning, Nov. 28, at 9:30 o'clock.

Ellis Cope Tomlinson was born in Belmont county, Ohio, March 30th, 1837. His family were identified with the Friends church and his early religious education was of this persuasion and remained with him to the end of life.

In 1861 he was married to Marian Gregg of the state of Ohio. To this union two children were born, Oliver and Eva, both of whom, with the mother, preceded him to the future world.

In 1897 he was again married to Mary E. Wakelee of New York city who survives him to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband.

In the civil war he enlisted in Company C, 52nd Ohio Infantry and served three years. The principal engagements in which he participated were those of Richmond, Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and in the great campaign of the march to the sea and the advance upon Atlanta.

He was mustered out at Camp Chase, at Columbus, Ohio, in 1865.

Coming west in the fall of 1868 he settled first near West Liberty in Cedar County. A little later he removed to Johnson county where he resided for two years, thence to Downey where he remained for 20 years, and from thence he came to West Branch where he has since resided.

He has filled several positions of importance, with much acceptability and credit in the public affairs of the town and community. At one time mayor of the city, for 12 years a member of the city council, and occupied the office of Justice of the Peace at the time of his decease. He was a charter member of Nolan Morrison Post No. 248 and served as adjutant for many years.

While the hands that have been busy with the labors of a world of need have ceased their activities in this life, we trust that in the good works which they may have wrought shall still follow hereafter.

The funeral took place from the home in West Branch Sunday afternoon, Nov. 30, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F. L. Ryon of the Friends church officiating. The interment was in the West Branch cemetery.
