Rachel Oliphant was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, in 1825. She came to Cedar county, Iowa, and was married to Wm. Townsend in 1864. To them were born two sons, J. Walter, deceased, and O. L. Townsend, with whom she lived. Her husband died in Iowa about twenty years ago. She removed to Salem, Oregon, seven years ago and made her home with D. D. Keeler until about two years ago when she went to live with her son, Oliver, with whom she was making her home at the time of her death.

She quietly passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6. Nearly two years ago she had a fall and broke her hip and had to go in a wheel chair the balance of her life.

She was the last of a family of nine children. She lived a devoted, consistent Christian life and was a birth-right member of the Friends church.
