11 January 1894 - West Branch Times

Mary Ann Cook died at her home in West Branch of lung fever, Jan. 5th, 1894, after an illness of less than two weeks, aged 66 years.

The deceased was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hirst. She was born near Flushing, Belmont county, Ohio, Jan 5, 1828. In 1851 she was united in marriage with James Cook, who preceeded her to that eternal city less than six months ago. Two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Hawley and Mrs. Chas. Hathaway, were present at the time of her death, their sister Mrs. Mattie Moore, and brother Thomas, both of Nebraska, arriving in time to attend the funeral services which were held Sunday afternoon at Downey street Friends church. At this service there was an unusually large company present, Rev. Henry Pemberton discoursed briefly upon the benediction . . . The veteran acquaintance of the family, Rev. J. Y. Hoover closed the final sad rites in a tender tribute to the memory of one whose acquaintance he had been privileged to enjoy for more than a third of a century. The remains were laid beside those of her husband in Friends' cemetery.

In the death of Mary Ann Cook, a mother in the home, in the community, in the church was taken. For long years she had been an active member with Friends. Her words of exhortion and comfort in public were usually brief and earnest, but always from a warm and sympathetic heart. She was present in usual health at the regular Sabbath morning meeting, just two weeks previous to the funeral services. In this transition the local W.C.T.U. looses a staunch member and active support, for several consecutive years she having been president of that body.

On account of indisposition in his family, Henry L. Cook, of St. Paul, Neb. was unable to be present.
