11 October 1923 - West Branch Times

Born Sept. 22, 1837, in Flushing, Ohio, Elizabeth Cook was the descendant of English Quakers and Methodists who endured the hardships of a new land that they might have freedom of conscience. Her early life was spent among the Quakers whose principles of duty to God and brotherly love were imbedded deeply in her character. Her life was characterized by its purity, devotion to duty and love for her fellow men expressed in her generosity of judgment and unfailing hospitality. Ever the center of her family, first as petted baby sister, then as loved wife and mother, her chief and most constant interest was in her family and the friends of that circle. When trouble and sorrow came she showed bravery and fortitude; when happiness came she always wanted to share it with others. Appreciative of all others gave her she loved to give even more. Surely goodness and mercy followed her all the days of her life and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

At the age of eighteen she was married to Smith Branson, who passed away forty-five years ago. For many years her home was in West Branch, leaving here about thirty years ago to live in Cedar Rapids. Her last residence here ended eighteen years ago when she went to Chicago to live with her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Satterthewait, at whose home she died, Saturday morning.

She leaves to mourn, two sons, Dr. L. L. Branson of Oklahoma City, Okla., L. E. Branson of Burlington, and one daughter, Mrs. Satterthewait, of Chicago.

Funeral services were held in Chicago, Sunday afternoon, and a brief service was conducted from the Friends church in West Branch, Monday morning, by Rev. W. H. Wilson. Interment was made in the beautiful cemetery on the hill.

Those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Satterthewait of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Branson of Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Cook of Oskaloosa; Mrs. A. L. Branson of Muscatine and Miss Doris Yetter of Cedar Rapids.
