2 March 1922 - West Branch Times

Alfred Millett, son of William and Sabrah Millett, was born in Liverpool, England, Feb. 3, 1837. He died at Springdale, Iowa, Feb. 25, 1922, at the age of 85 years and 22 days.

He was the oldest of nine children. One brother, William, of Muscatine, and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Fowles, of Canton, S.D., survive him.

When Alfred was quite young his parents immigrated with their family to Delaware where they remained a few years and immigrated west and made their home near Atalissa, Iowa, where his mother died in 1859, and later the family settled near Springdale. On his birthday in 1859 Alfred Millett was married to Sarah Jones. To this union eight children were born: Sabrah Pearson, Lizzie Teefy, Alice Moorhead, Mary Frances Watters, Lucy, Louis, Albert and Lee; all of whom live near Springdale and were present in his last sickness except Mrs. Sabrah Pearson of Homestead, Fla. By the death of the mother Feb. 19, 1879, the care of the large family fell upon him. True to his wife's dying request he undertook to keep the family together and rear them into useful manhood and womanhood. How faithfully he met this responsibility the children all bear grateful testimony. How well he did it the friends of the family recognize as we see them all actively interested in the work of the church.

In his earlier and more active life he was identified with and interested in the work of the church; though being of a retiring disposition, he rarely gave public expression to his faith. He was tireless and constant in his devotion to the cause of temperance, being one of the first supporters of the Prohibition party, often casting the only vote of that part at the polls in his township. His children express their gratitude that he lived to see the consummation of his great hope.

Alfred Millett, a man of sterling character, high ideals and unflinching devotion to duty, passes from our midst honored by all and loved best by those who knew him best.

The funeral services were held in the Friends church in Springdale at half past one o'clock, Monday afternoon, Feb. 27, Rev. Alden Knight of that church presiding. The message was by Rev. W. G. Rowley of the Methodist church. Interment was in the North Liberty cemetery.
