Samuel Macy was born in Bedford county, Virginia, January 4th, 1802. Removed from there with his parents to Stark county, Ohio, in 1807, where he lived until 1851. Then with his wife and five children, came to Cedar county, Iowa.

Deceased married Mary Gruwell in August, 1828 and to them were born ten children, four of whom died in Ohio in their childhood, two sons died in the army of the late rebellion and one, the youngest, was accidently shot by a friend on their way to Montana while on a steamer going up the Missouri river. An other son has lived in Nicaragua, Central America, since 1860. Alice Wolf, wife of Wm. P. Wolf, died in Tipton, Cedar county in 1881. Deceased lived with his remaining daughter, Sarah M. Heald, most of the time for the last twenty one years at whose home in West Branch he died September 11th, 1891 in the 90th year of his age.
