19 November 1931 - West Branch Times

A host of appreciative relatives and friends of John Wilson Hargrave pause today with bowed heads and thoughtful minds to pay a last tribute to him, realizing that in his departure from life, there has gone from among us a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friends, a valuable, dignified useful citizen.

John Hargrave, son of Fleming and Roannah Hargrave, was born a Birthright Friend August 10, 1865 at Short Creek, Ohio, where his boyhood and early school days were happily spent. At the age of fifteen the family moved to West Branch, Iowa, where his higher education was continued, and business activities were taken up. Upon the passing away of his mother he went to Ipswitch, South Dakota and became identified with the banking business which he followed through life. Later on he was connected with banking activities at Hankinson, North Dak.

He was united in marriage with Mary D. Miles Hargrave, and a home of Christian influence and gracious culture was established, where, through the years their children have observed most exemplary conduct and character.

They moved to San Pedro, Calif. in 1912, where for three years Mr. Hargrave was connected with the Farmers and Merchants Bank, and in 1916 they came to Yorba Linda where he organized the First National Bank which organization he has served most efficiently as its President.

He was one of the first men of the district to enter into the life of the Masonic Lodge after its organization, and for more than ten years has served as Treasurer of the Lodge. With his wife he became a member of the Yorba Linda Eastern Star and always took such deep interest in the ceremonies. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, both local, County and State; the Imperial Highway Association and other civic activities. He was one of the staunch and effectual members in building up the Friends church at Yorba Linda, always bearing more than his share of the burdens, laboring unceasingly and unassumingly for the cause of the right. He was ever alert to the great work of the Y.M.C.A. and always active in this most excellent endeavor.

He is survived by his most devoted wife Mary D. Miles Hargrave; and their children, Mrs. Merl Hargrave Sheets of Fullerton; Arthur C. Hargrave of Ontario; George M. Hargrave of Honolulu; and Edgar J. Hargrave of El Centro, Calif.

In his going we realize that we have lost one of the community's most valuable citizens; one of the best friends we ever had; one of the exemplary examples of character. Gone to "that undiscovered country, from whose bourne no traveler returns", but the vibrations of truth, right and honor set in motion by his life will benefit mankind so long as time shall last. In sincere memory, Carl H. Seamans.
