Chelan, Wash., May 28.--Funeral services for J. P. Varney, 89 year old veteran of the Civil War, who died at his home in Lakeside Monday morning, were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Lakeside church.

Varney had been a resident of this community for the past 12 years and is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

J. P. Varney was born March 24, 1842, at Angola, New York, later moving to Springdale, Iowa, where in 1865 he was married to Miss Hanna Heacock of West Branch, Iowa. They continued to live in Iowa and Nebraska for several years, finally moving to Chelan in 1919.

Varney is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Phelps of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Mary Lloyd of Spirit Lake, Idaho. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Varney of which the following survive: Mrs. Clara Johns . . . Varney of Trinidad, Leroy S. Varney of Wilmington, Calif., Cora T. Varney of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mrs. Anna Davis of Ottumwa, Iowa, Leonna and Harry Varney of Chelan.
