16 April 1891 - West Branch Times

DIED At the home of Jesse Negus, West Branch, Iowa, after a little more than twenty four hours' illness of asthma and heart failure, ELIZA WATSON, in her seventy-second year.

She was the daughter of James and Mary Heald, and was united in marriage to Matthew Watson on 1st month 30th, 1845, by which union they had six children, two of whom are still living, William Watson, attorney at law, of White Oaks, New Mexico, and Barclay S. Watson, M.D., of Oskaloosa, Iowa. They, with their many relatives and friends, deeply mourn their loss.

She was a good and tender mother, a loving and sympathizing friend, ever ready whenever in her power to cheer and assist the sick and afflicted. For many years she was an invalid, during which time she was bereaved of her loving husband, whom she survived nearly thirty years. After being raised to comparatively good health, she took care of her cherished daughter, Mary, a patient sufferer for thirteen years, and thus was able to enter into sympathy with those in affliction.

She was a wise counselor, encouraging the good in all, still oft times a sharp reprover of evil--many times remarking "It is said, thou shalt not suffer sin on thy neighbor." Lev. xix.17. She strove to assist in the reforms of the day--in the cause of peace and arbitration, temperance and prohibition and the down trodden of her sex--rejoicing especially in the elevation of the women in India.

She was catholic in her views, willing to receive all as brothers and sisters who believed in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and strove to follow Him, belonging to whatever denomiation or classes to the outward. She was a birth-right member of the Society of Friends, and she labored for and desired to see the principles, doctrines and practices of the Society held and lived up to in their purity. She was a member of the West Branch Monthly and Quarterly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, (Orthodox Conservative) A minister for many years, often acceptably traveling in truth service.
