28 November 1901 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. Behrend, mother of John Behrend, of Springfield township, and Henry Behrend, of near Clarence, died last week Monday at the home of John Dettmann, on the farm southeast of Clarence, at the mature age of 82 years, 3 months and 8 days. Mrs. Dettmann is her granddaughter, and came across the Atlantic with her 10 years ago. Since then she has resided with her children and grandchildren, of late making her home with the Dettmanns. Deceased came from near Rehna Mecklenberg, Schwerin, Germany, where her husband, John Behrend, died 19 years ago. All of her sisters and brothers died long ago except Joe Dins. The funeral was held Wednesday and the remains laid to rest in the Van Horn cemetery. Five children, 29 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, together with her brother and many other relatives, survive to mourn her departure. Deceased was known as a lady of cheerful disposition and hard work, in which her time was mostly employed, was to her a pleasure. She was always strong and healthy, and never sick during her long life, except during the last five weeks, when the strong frame gradually wore down. Her time to depart had come, and she died from the infirmities of old age.
