Herbert R., son of Richard and Mary Ann Ellwood, one of a family of seven children, was born on a farm near Maquoketa, Iowa, September 5, 1867. He passed away in Tipton, Wednesday, May 1st, 1935 at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 26 days. He came to Cedar county about 1900. Before that time he had been a farmer. Coming to Tipton, he engaged in the mercantile business with his brothers for a good many years. For the last several years he has been in poor health. The end came suddenly for him.

He leaves to mourn his passing, a sister, Mrs. Carrie E. Ferman of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Charles H. of Tipton and James D. of Davenport. Mr. Ellwood was of quiet disposition, good habits, friendly and industrious.

Funeral service was held on Friday May 3rd, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon at the Methodist church, the pastor, Rev. Roscoe C. Jerrell, in charge.

Mrs. George Fraseur and Mrs. J. E. Chamberlain sang with Mrs. P. M. Hoffman at the organ. The casket bearers were Forrest Carey, Charles Porter, Ed Horn, William Brown, Pete Bunker and Elmer Barnes. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery.
