Joseph Whalen, well known former Tipton man passed away at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, July 12, at his home at Norway, Iowa, following an illness of several months. Funeral services will be conducted at Norway Catholic church at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning, the Rev. Fr. William A. Kunkle in charge. Interment will be in the Catholic cemetery of that community.

"Joe" as he was familiary known to his many friends in Tipton, was a veteran of the Spanish American war and the past several years had been town marshal at Norway, Ia.

He was born in Cedar county, Ia., February 28, 1880, and was 52 years of age at the time of his passing.

Until the last sixteen years he had resided in Tipton, and since locating at Norway had served as town marshal until failing health caused his retirement.

Surviving besides the widow are six children, Mrs. Mary Trapp of Cedar Rapids, Ann and Leona, both of Norway; Joseph Jr., James and Danny, at home; also four sisters, Mrs. Chris Anderson of Des Moines, Mrs. Harry Hickey and Mrs. Will Shaffer, both of Tipton; Mrs. Wilbur Reed, of Lowden, and two brothers, James of Davenport and John of Cedar Rapids.
