18 March 1904 - The Tipton Advertiser

Joseph Van Buren Delaplane was born in Richland county, Ohio, March 19, 1838, and died in Tipton, Iowa, March 15, 1904, being 66 years of age lacking four days.

In 1859 he was married to Rhoda Kennedy and two sons were born to them, both of whom are dead. The mother of these two children also passed away during the summer of 1862. A short time after her death Aug. 31, 1862, Mr. Delaplane enlisted in Co. 1, 91st Ohio Infantry and served his country fighting for the union in the Shenandoah Valley, and was wounded in the battle of Cedar Creek. He received his discharge June 24, 1865. At the close of the war, he came west with his brother, two sisters and the father and settled in this county, which has been home since that time.

He was married again March 29, 1866 to Emma L. Sweinhart, who survives him. This union was blessed with three children, Galen S. of Cherokee, Mrs. Mary E. France, and Miss Jennie E. Miss Harriet L. Kennedy, who has been a member of the family for ten years, two grandchildren, and two sisters also remain to mourn his sudden departure.

His death was sudden and unexpected, although shadows of the event had been cast before, unseen then, but visible now. He had not been in the best of health for some time on account of heart trouble, but was going around attending to his work until the heart refused to perform its work and the end came. As far as we know he had gone to the barn to attend to some little duty, and feeling illness coming on, laid down, and in a moment the spirit had taken its flight. He was a member of the Reformed church of this place, as well as a member of the S.S. and a believer in the Risen Christ in whom he trusted for salvation.

Funeral services were conducted in the church of which he was a member Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, which were attended by the G.A.R. and M.B.A besides a large concourse of friends. Interment in the Masonic cemetery.
