25 October 1928 - The Tipton Advertiser

Funeral services were conducted at the Tipton M.E. church this afternoon at 2:30 for S. D. Casad, who passed away at 1:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, after an illness of more than a year. Mr. Casad had made his home in recent years with his niece, Mrs. H. R. Ripley, in this city, where he was tenderly cared for during his infirmities of old age.

When Lincoln called for 85,000 men in a hundred days, S. D. Casad enlisted at Chillicothe, Ohio, 149th Ohio Inf. Company A. They were transported to the eastern defense of Baltimore, where they waded across the river and entered the fray. When the war was over Mr. Casad came to Iowa, and was in the employ of the American Express Co. for thirty-five years.

S. D. Casad was one of the few surviving veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic of this city, and has answered the call to join the army of his Master. He had reached the age of eighty-three years.
