6 April 1865 - The Tipton Advertiser

Mr. Jesse L. Bradshaw was born in Connecticut, the 23d of July, 1814, and died in Tipton, Iowa, February 25th, 1865. His parents were pious, and gave their children the inestimable advantages of a religious training. Mr. Bradshaw, when but 12 years of age, gave his young heart to the Saviour, and united with the church, and continued a consistent member of the same until his death. He was married to Miss Priss Condit, October 14th, 1837. She survives him, together with several children, who mourn their loss.

During his last illness he frequently expressed his confidence in the Saviour, and a perfect willingness to die. He bid his family a formal farewell, and (like Jacob the aged patriarch), gave to each his dying council and blessing.

Mr. Bradshaw was an honest man, and as such commanded the respect of the entire community, as well as wherever known. His was a meek and quiet spirit. Not contentious, nor meddlesome, but he loved peace, and pursued it. He possessed a sympathetic and benevolent nature. Not demonstrative, but ever ready to listen to tales of human distress, and without ostentatious display upon the one hand, or captionsness upon the other, cheerfully relieved according to the measure of his judgment and ability.

The crowning glory of his life and character, however, was his steady, uniform and consistent piety. This, like a line of divine light, threads its way through all the years of his religious life, and culminates in its glory, when about to pass the cold river.

That he had faults and infirmities we may not question, but few, very few men indeed have left a clearer record than he.

In the decease of Mr. Bradshaw, Cedar county has lost a faithful officer, community a good citizen, the church a useful and efficient member, the tearful family its best earthly guide and protector. Motives to selfishness are strong, but we must be content. "Our loss doubtless is infinite gain to him." J. G. Dimmitt. Tipton, March 21st, 1865
