Hugh W. McLeod was born March 27th, 1879, at Pleasant Hill, Benton county, Iowa. In 1882 his father Wm. A. McLeod, moved with his family to Atkins where he conducted a general store until his death in the fall of 1887. About one year later, when Hugh was nine years old, his mother moved the stock of merchandise to Springdale in Cedar county on account of better school facilities for her boys. Hugh graduated from the Springdale High school in the spring of 1896, going to Cedar Rapids in the fall of the same year and entering the Cedar Rapids Business College. Soon after finishing the business course he passed examination for government service and was appointed to a clerkship in the Cedar Rapids post office in 1898, where he rose through the various positions until his appointment as assistant postmaster in 1911, which position he held at the time of his death on August 24th, 1920.

He was a thirty-second degree Mason and Shriner, and Past Master of Mt. Hermon Lodge of Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian church and in these organizations, as well as among his business associates and outside of them, leaves a multitude of friends to mourn his loss.

Surviving relatives are, his wife, a son, Hugh Wallace Jr., aged 11; a daughter Danelia Jane, age 6, mother Mrs. Martha H. McLeod, and brother, Arthur A. McLeod, all of whom were with him when he passed away.

Rev. E. R. Burkhalter had charge of the funeral services which were held in Turner Chapel, Cedar Rapids Friday at ten o'clock.

His popularity was shown by the hundreds of friends who gathered to pay a final tribute to his memory.
