24 June 1920 - The West Branch Times

The community was shocked and grieved Friday by the news of the sudden passing of a manly man, J. H. Christie of West Branch. Mr. Christie was born near Mansfield, Ohio, June 25, 1844. He came to Iowa when 21 years of age and settled near Oxford, Iowa. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Anna G. Gould. To this union were born eight children, four of whom were called away in early childhood. Four still survive him, Mrs. Lillie McLain of Rocky Point, Wyo., Mrs. Ella Corning of Ithaca, N. Y., and F. H. Christie and E. E. Christie of West Branch.

Mr. Christie resided at Oxford until 1909, when he moved to Wyoming, where his wife passed away Dec. 11, 1911. Later he returned to Iowa, making his home with his son, Frank, at West Branch. Here he received his final summons, Friday, June 18th, 1920.

He also leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers, one sister and twenty grandchildren, besides a host of friends.

Mr. Christie was a member of the local Masonic lodge, having transferred from the Oxford lodge, where he joined in 1881.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the Oxford M. E. church, conducted by Rev. Tatta, followed by the Masons of Oxford and West Branch, who took charge at the church and grave.

"First the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear", illustrates the life, activities and character of Mr. Christie.
