The following reprint was taken from the Harlan County Ranger of Republican City, Neb., and tells of the death of a former resident of West Branch.

"Mary E. Hawley, March 10, 1847-December 15, 1919

Mary Elinor Craighead, daughter of William G. and Rebecca Craighead, born near New Lisbon, Ohio, March 10, 1847, where she resided with her parents until the autumn of 1854 when she moved with her parents to Cedar county, Iowa, attended the State University at Iowa City, Iowa, preparatory to teaching school. United in marriage March 10, 1866 with Isaac G. Hawley to which union five sons and two daughters were born, all of which survive her.

In the spring of 1876, she with her husband and family emigrated to Phillips county, Kans., by team and wagon and settled on a homestead and resided there until the spring of 1910 when they moved to Republican City where her husband died in the autumn of the same year.

In the year 1879 the deceased united herself with the Society of Friends and remained a faithful member the remainder of her life, ever ready to administer to the needs of the needy and afflicted, a kind neighbor, an affectionate companion and mother.

The deceased is survived by one brother, A. N. Craighead, St. Paul, Minn.; one sister, Emma J. Wallick, Ottumwa, Iowa; five sons and two daughters, Chas. E., Jameston, N.D.; Ronzo D., St. Francis, Kans.; Walter I., Republican City, Neb.; Emma Ralston, Republican City, Neb.; Joseph P., Eckley, Colo.; Alice Kerr, Carthage, N.M., and Oliver P., Republican City, Neb., all of whom were present at the funeral.

The deceased was one of the early pioneers of this part of the country and helped blaze the way for the conditions which made possible the many fine homes in the neighborhood which she loved to call hers.

The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Republican City cemetery, Dec. 18, 1919."
