19 May 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

Roy E. Kendall, young man of 35 years, William Rogers, age 66, and Jake Graft, son of Will Graft, all of Stanwood, met with an auto accident about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday forenoon at the crossroads 5 miles north of Stanwood, resulting in the death of Mr. Kendall and critical injury of Mr. Rogers who later passed away at the hospital in Cedar Rapids at 1:30 that afternoon. Graft escaped injury. The Stanwood Herald account of the accident says:

In a serious automobile accident Wednesday morning, Roy Kendall was killed and Wm. Rogers died at two o'clock the same afternoon from injuries sustained when the car in which they were riding skidded and turned over on the road just north of the Clarence Andre farm. Jake Graft, the third party in the car escaped injury.

Wm. Rogers, who was driving the car, apparently lost control of it as it passed over the top of a small knoll at that point of the road. The three men were thrown clear of the car. Mr. Graft, who was unhurt, immediately ran to the Andre farm for help. Mr. Andre and his son Paul, with the help of road men put the injured men in their car and rushed them to Mechanicsville to Dr. Stookey's office.

Mr. Kendall passed away in the doctor's office without regaining consciousness. Mr. Rogers was rushed to the hospital at Cedar Rapids where little hope was held for his recovery. He was seriously injured about the face evidently having been thrown through the wind shield.

At first it was thought that Mr. *** of life were shown and he was rushed at once to the doctors office. He was badly injured about the head and suffered internal injuries.

The men were on their way to the Rogers farm where they were expecting to shell corn. Mr. Kendall left home in the best of spirits at the prospect of a day's work as he had been among the unemployed for some time. As far as can be learned there were no eye witnesses and it is hard to say just how the accident occurred, but from the condition of the car it is evident that it must have turned over several times, the car being a total wreck.

Parts of the car were strewn for a considerable distance along the road and one piece of the steering wheel was hurled some distance into the field.

Mr. Kendall is survived by his widow and three children, Laura, Howard and Earl. He was thirty-five years of age. Mr. Rogers was 66 years of age. He is survived by his widow and a niece, Alice, and nephew Gerald, who made their home with their uncle, besides several brothers and other nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Mr. Kendall will be held Friday afternoon in the Presbyterian church in charge of Rev. Hemphill. No date has been set for the funeral of Mr. Rogers, but it will be private, as will be the burial. The family request that flowers be omitted.
