19 May 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

Matilda Kern was born at Norway, Ia., May 1, 1874. She was the only daughter in a family of eight children of whom Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kern were the parents. Her early life was spent in Pocahontas County, Iowa, where on July 13, 1891, she was married to George Herbst. Not long after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Herbst moved to a farm north of Cedar Bluff, which was their home for a considerable time. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living, as follows: Mrs. Norman Frederick of Buchanan, Ia.; William Herbst of Mechanicsville, Mrs. Velma Steffens and Mrs. Leone Burroughs, both of Tipton.

For a few years Mr. and Mrs. Herbst lived at Verndale, Minn., where on Sept. 30, 1916, Mr. Herbst died. For a time after her husband's death Mrs. Herbst was a resident of Tipton. Because of failing health she had recently lived with her daughter, Mrs. Frederick, where she was tenderly cared for until death summoned her Monday, May 9. Had she lived six more days she would have been 58 years old. All of her brothers survive her. They are Henry of Tipton, Leonard, Egan, S. D., Martin, Frank, Silas and James, Verndale, Minn.; Carl of Tipton, Ia. and a half-sister, Mrs. Edwin Gustafson of Sherben, Minn. There are also five grandchildren.

Mrs. Herbst possessed the graces of womanhood that made her a valuable asset in her home and for her friends. She was domestic in her tastes and priorities. Tireless worker, devoting her thought and energy to providing care for her loved ones. In infancy she was baptized in the Lutheran faith.

Funeral services were held May 12 at the Cedar Bluff Church by Rev. W. E. Van Buren of Tipton. Interment was made in the Mason cemetery. Six brothers carried the casket to its resting place.
