26 August 1920 - The West Branch Times

Samuel F. Adair was born in Lancaster county, Penn., July 24, 1838, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. M. Colip, Regan, N.D., Aug. 19, 1920, aged 82 years, 8 months and 25 days. He came to Iowa in 1856 and settled near Oasis in Johnson county. He was married to Susan Hawley in 1856 to whom six children were born, three dying in infancy; one son, Finley, died June 6, 1912, in West Branch, C. H. Adair of Santa Margarita, California and Mrs. O. M. Colip of Regan. N.D., survive their father.

Mr. Adair moved to California and shortly after the wife and mother died. In 1872 he returned to Iowa and settled again near Oasis where he made his home until the removal to West Branch some ten or twelve years ago. June 16, 1873, he was married to Sarah Harrison of Ohio, to whom a son, F. B. Adair was born, who with his sister, Mary Colip, came with the father to lay him beside the mother, who died in 1911.

Comrade Adair is survived by three children, C. B. Adair of Santa Margarita, Calif., F. B. Adair of Yosemite, Calif., and Mrs. O. M. Colip of Regan, N. D., eight grandchildren and three great granddaughters.

S. F. Adair was a member of Noel Morrison Post of West Branch. He served three years during the Civil war in the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry to whom taps will sound but once. He was a member of the I.O.O.F., who with their badges of sorrow go with him to his last resting place. From seventeen years of age he has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and as the years gathered about him he seemed to draw closer to the ideals and faith taught by the One who died on Calvary.

The funeral service was held in the Methodist church at half past three Sunday afternoon, and Rev. W. G. Rowley and Rev. J. B. Metcalf both spoke. The I.O.O.F. Lodge had charge of the service at the grave and a grandson of the deceased blew taps.
