6 April 1944 - The Clarence Sun

Herman Gehrke died at his home on Saturday evening after a steady decline in health the past few years. He was born in Germany, Feb. 14, 1870, and was 74 years, one month and 15 days old at death. About 35 years ago he came to this vicinity from Germany and worked as a farm hand, being employed for a long time by Thomas Kane. In 1920 he married Miss Maria Schultz of Chicago who died Jan. 8, 1933. Herman is the last of his family unless a sister in Germany is still living. No word has been received from her since just before the war. She tried then to escape from Germany, was captured and put in a concentration camp. One sister died last year in Peotone, Ill., and a brother in Chicago four years ago. His only living relatives are nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held from the Beck Funeral Home on Tuesday with burial in St. John's cemetery. Rev. F. J. Mittler officiated. The pall bearers were H. J. Klatt, Robert Stanlake, Frank Dohrman, Howard Claney.
