24 May 1945 - The Clarence Sun

J. F. Gortner, second son of Peter and Mary Ann Gortner, was born December 30, 1858. He passed away at his home near Clarence, May 14, 1945, after several weeks of severe illness.

Mr. Gortner spent most of his boyhood years in the vicinity of Clarence. He attended the public school near his home. Being fond of music and having a good tenor voice, the old fashioned singing school was very attractive to him.

In December, 1894, he was married to Francis Mary Sisler. To this union three daughters were born: Mrs. Naomi Yock, Mrs. Mary Workman and Verna, who has lived all her life with her father on the farm.

There are four grandchildren, Corporal Clarence Yock, who now has a San Francisco address, Harold and Harlan of Clarence and Mrs. Lois Workman Yock of Olin, and two great grandchildren.

In his younger days, Mr. Gortner learned much from the experience gained by hard work. His life was spent in farming until the infirmities of advanced age caused him to rent the land so that crop raising might continue.

Newspaper reading gave him much pleasure and even after his sight was poor he read the larger print.

As a boy he attended the Red Oak church and later the Clarence Methodist Sunday school and church services.

During the pastorate of Rev. S. S. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Gortner enjoyed very much the calls of both Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church.

Rev. A. B. Chamberlin officiated. Burial followed in the Clarence cemetery.
