17 May 1945 - The Clarence Sun

Alex Grant was born at Andes, N. Y., Jan. 31, 1859. He died at his home, Santa Ana, Calif., April 19, 1945. He had a serious operation a year ago and while in frail health had enjoyed life fully to the end.

In his early youth the family of Alex Grant moved to Clarence, Iowa, where he served as a banker, postmaster and real estate dealer.

In March, 1907, the Grant family moved to Fairmont, Minn., purchasing a home at 501 S. Park St., where they resided until Mr. Grant and daughters moved west in 1920. They resided a year in San Diego, then moved to Santa Ana, where Mr. Grant became interested with his old Fairmont neighbor and friend, G. T. Houseman, in an important real estate development.

Mrs. Grant died in Fairmont Sept. 21, 1914. There were two daughters, Isabel and Margaret. Isabel is now Mrs. Wilbur Getty, Santa Ana, and Margaret, who maintained her father's home after Mrs. Grant died. Isabel has two daughters and a son, Wilbur Grant, now a seaman first class, U. S. Navy, stationed at Pensacola, Fla. There is also one great grandson, Roger Nagel.

A brother, John, of Stanwood, and his son Victor were at Fairmont for the burial. A sister, Mrs. Kate Sylvester, widowed, lived with Mr. Grant in Santa Ana.

While a resident at Fairmont, Mr. Grant engaged in the real estate business. He was much interested in civic affairs and in the historic wet and dry election of 1915 was elected alderman. He was a great baseball enthusiast, playing the game semi-professionally in his younger days, also an expert checker player. He got great enjoyment out of these pastimes until a few days before his death.

Realizing that his end was at hand Mr. Grant directed that his body be returned to Fairmont for burial beside his wife, also selected his pallbearers from among old friends still living in the Minnesota town.

Miss Margaret accompanied the body but the train traveled in two sections. She was in the first section, the casket in the other, which was delayed by a wreck. Will and Harry Bird drove to St. James Wednesday night and met Margaret.

The casket reached Fairmont the following day and Friday afternoon, April 27, simple committal services by Rev. A. E. Fillmore were had at Lakeside.
