17 September 1953 - The Clarence Sun

As day draws to a close we are always glad when the sun sets clear and peacefully. So in human life as it ends we are glad to have it end peacefully. Such a privilege was granted to Mrs. Ruth Findlay as is so beautifully pictured in Tennyson's Sunset and Evening Star.

The daughter of Wm. and Ellen Hart Rickard, she was born in Cedar county October 10, 1870 in the Red Oak Grove neighborhood. She grew to womanhood on the farm.

On April 18, 1891 she was united in marriage with George Findlay. To them were given 51 years of wedded life. Mr. Findlay passed away in 1942. To them were born eight children, three of whom survive: Marion of Ontario, Calif., Clarence of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Helen Lane of Clarence. Mr. and Mrs. Findlay prospered on the farm south west of Stanwood. Finding they had a competence on which to live they retired to their home in Stanwood in 1916, which was to be her residence until death invaded the house.

Mrs. Findlay was of a gentle kindly nature. She took seriously the teachings of her Master and incorporated them in her life. Many remember her deeds of kindness. A life long member of the Methodist church. She also was connected with the Order of Eastern Star being a charter member of Idelle chapter.

A gradual decline of body and mind brought her to a peaceful passage from this life early on the morning of September 9th, 1953.

Besides the surviving children she leaves 10 grand children, 2 sisters Mrs. E. H. Anschutz of Long Grove and Mrs. Lenna Armstrong of Sidney, Neb.

Funeral services were conducted from the Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence Saturday, September 12th, 1953 by Gordon Smith. Music was furnished by Mrs. Anna Klatt and Mrs. Adelia Liercke accompanied by Mrs. Kay Simerman. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Jean Harness and Mrs. Eloise Kline. Pallbearers were Glen Tenley, Floyd Spear, Roland Spear and Ed Liercke.

She was laid to rest in the family lot in Red Oak Grove Cemetery where graveside O. E. S. services were conducted.
