Margaretha Catherina Pauline Kelling was born in Holstein, Germany, on June 28, 1837. She died on August 4, 1910, after having been seriously sick for some time.

Deceased came to America in 1854, locating at Davenport, Iowa. On March 28, 1856, she was united in marriage to Henry Brendes, at Davenport. They resided in Scott county until 1880, when they moved to Springfield township, Cedar county, Iowa. They have resided here ever since, with the exception of a short time that they resided at Wheatland, Iowa.

Mrs. Brendes was, before her last ailment always healthy, and she was a fine old lady. She died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. W. Kleppe, in Springfield township, at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 7 days. There survive to mourn her demise her sorrowing husband, eight daughters, one son, fourty-two grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren.

The funeral of Mrs. Brendes occurred Saturday with services at the house and interment in the Van Horn cemetery. Rev. Werning of Lowden officiated, and the following members of the Lowden Krieger Verein were pallbearers: Fred Dircks, Wm. Struck, Claus Stange, Dietrich Greafing, Carl Krenz and Henry Von Muenster.
