10 November 1911 - The Lowden News

Bertha Eleonora Nieting was born here at Lowden on January 18, 1900. She died here at her home Tuesday morning November 7th at five o'clock, at the age of but 11 years, 9 months and 20 days. She was the daughter of our neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. August Nieting.

Bertha took sick about eight months ago with spine trouble loosing the same time the use of both of her legs. She never regained the use of her legs, and during the summer we frequently saw loving relatives wheel the little girl about in a little hand buggy to get fresh air and help her to pass the time as pleasantly as was possible. She always received the best of care and all that medical science could do was done for her, but all of no avail, no cure could be effected. The quiet, patient little sufferer gradually grew weaker, and for several weeks the end could be expected to be near; then two days before her death pneumonia set in. All her pains ended Tuesday morning. She peacefully went to sleep.

There survive to mourn little Bertha's departure the sorrowing parents, two brothers and four sisters (an other of her brothers having died in infancy). All here sympathize deeply with the bereaved family.

Funeral occurred yesterday afternoon, services were held in the Lutheran church and interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery. Rev. Brammer officiated. Four girls were pallbearers namely, Hulda Kruckenberg, Alvina Schlueter, Martha Ginap and Laura Deke, and Mathilda Ernsting and Irene Brammer were the flower girls. These six girls were dressed in white. The four pallbearers carried into the church the remains of their departed friend, in her pretty white casket, the flower girls coming in ahead carrying beautiful floral pieces.

Regardless of rain and muddy roads there was a large attendance in the church. The solemn services were very impressive. Near the close of the services scholars of the Lutheran school sang a beautiful song, being a sweet farewell for their departed schoolmate and friend.
