24 March 1911 - The Lowden News

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Guenther has been plunged in sorrow by the death of their little son, Harold, which occurred last Thursday.

Harold John Guenther was born Dec. 18, 1907. He had always been in good health and his death came as a very great shock. He was a bright little fellow and the favorite of everyone who called at the home. The date of his death was Thursday, March 16, 1911. At the time of his decease, he was 3 years, 2 months and 28 days old. The funeral, which was a great tribute to his popularity was held Sunday at 2 o'clock at the home. The funeral services were given in both English and German and were conducted by Rev. Gatermann, pastor of the German Reform church.

Members of the German Reform church choir furnished the singing. The songs at the house were "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Go Bury They Sorrow". At the cemetery, "Nearer My God to Thee" was sung. A special song, "Out of the Shadowland into the Sunshine" was rendered by Mrs. McKinney and her niece, Miss Taylor.

Four of Harold's companions and playmates, Raymond Brennen, Thomas Ficke, and Henry and Hubert Horstmann acted as pall bearers.

The flower girls were Wilma Riedesel, Gladys Jeppe, Agnes Winkler and Hazel Schneider. The interment was in the High German cemetery northeast of town.

Out of town relatives who came to pay the last tribute were Mr. and Mrs. John Guenther of Freeport, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Peter Guenther of Moline, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. August Dircks, Van Horn, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baurugart of Davenport, Iowa.
