30 August 1956 - The Clarence Sun

James M. Macaulay, 53, was born in Lewisburg, Ireland, on July 28, 1903, to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Macaulay and came to the United States with them when he was a year old. He was graduated from Coggon high school in 1923 and received his BA degree from Cornell in 1929. He had been a member of the Miltonian society and had participated in athletics while at college, lettering in baseball. His interest in sports carried into his teaching career, and he was a strong member of the alumni "C" club of his alma mater.

His college course was interrupted two years 1926-1928, while he taught at Clarence. Following his graduation from Cornell he taught five years at Onslow, serving as school superintendent. He took his graduate work at Columbia University from which he received his master's degree in 1936.

He was married on August 19th, 1930, to Irene Landt of Lanark, Ill., also a Cornellian. To them were born two sons, William who will be a sophomore this fall at Cornell, and Douglas who will enter high school. Also surviving are his father, the Rev. William J. Macaulay of Cedar Rapids, two brothers, John of Encintas, Calif., William of Richfield, Minn., and a sister, Mrs. James (Margaret) McMeekin of California.

Mr. Macaulay was a member of the Methodist church his entire lifetime and has served the Mount Vernon church as a member of the official board and for several years as lay leader.

He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Lions Club of which he was a past president.

In 1942 and 1943 he served as president of the National Association of Admissions Counselors, an organization which he was instrumental in forming and which is today an outstanding professional group. He was president of the Iowa Association of Counselors from 1946-1950.

His work in the admissions field and as director of Public Relations at Cornell from 1941 to 1956 had brought "Mac" many friends throughout the country who join those in Mt. Vernon in their regret at his passing.

Mr. Macaulay at the time of his passing had reached the age of 53 years and 21 days. Time of death was 11:10 a.m. Saturday, August 18th at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, at which place he had entered on Aug. 7th after an illness later diagnosed as a slight heart attack.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, August 22nd, in the Mt. Vernon Methodist church. Dr. Hugh B. Fouke, minister of the church, and Dr. Russell D. Cole, president of Cornell college, were in charge.

Interment was in the Mt. Vernon cemetery.

Mr. Macauley was well known in the Clarence community, not only because he had taught in the local school for two years, but by the fact that his father was a pastor in the local Methodist Church for a few years.
