Last rites for Dale Hammon Smith, 57, president and chairman of the board of the Fairfax County National bank, Seven Corners, Va. were held at Arlington, Va. Aug. 25, with burial in National Memorial park at Arlington.

Smith died at Cannon Memorial hospital, Banner Elk, N.C. Aug. 22 following a heart attack while visiting friends.

The son of Harry Sharp and Adda Wasser Smith, he was born in Red Oak township Aug. 4, 1914 and was a graduate of Stanwood high school and the University of Minnesota school of banking. He came to Tipton in 1936 after graduation from college and was connected with the Tipton State bank for 19 years, except for 3 years in military service during World War II.

He was executive vice-president of the Tipton bank when he sold his interest in the bank Jan. 11, 1955. Two years later he organized the Fairfax County National bank. Since then the bank has expanded to 10 locations in the Northern Virginia area with approximately $40 million in deposits and employing 125 people.

Smith served in numerous civic and banking activities in the Washington, D.C. area and was named last year to the advisory board of the Comptroller of Currency, U.S. Treasury department for the Fifth Federal Reserve district.

He was married to Thelma Dorothy Byers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Byers of West Branch, June 5, 1941 at Tipton. He was a charter member of the Tipton Rotary club.

During World War II he served for more than 3 years with the finance department from Dec. 2, 1942 to March 23, 1946, and was separated from service as a captain, he served with Headquarters, Army Service Force, Office of the Fiscal Director, Washington, D.C. He served in Nova Scotia during 1943.

He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Barry W., Fairfax, Va. and Kevin, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Janet S. Hamner, Fairfax; his mother and 2 brothers, Donald and Kenneth, Stanwood.
