14 October 1910 - The Lowden News

Seldom has a darker cloud of gloom and sadness visited a locality than that which came to Red Oak community early last Thursday a.m., when it was announced that Bertha A. Penningroth had passed away. She was the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Penningroth. Her death was sudden and unexpected, coming as a thunderbolt from a fair sky. She went to school on Monday in apparent good health but returned with a headache. On Tuesday a physician was called but was in doubt as to the affliction. Wednesday a.m. she seemed much improved but about noon she became violently sick and medical aid was summoned immediately. The physicians held a consultation but did not agree as to the nature of the affliction.

Bertha was born Dec. 7, 1896, in the family's present home and died Oct. 6, 1910, age 13 years, 9 months and 29 days.

This was her first year in high school. She was a very bright and studious pupil and applied herself diligently to her books. While of a quiet disposition she was a loveable child, having a smile and kind word for all. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of a host of friends.

The funeral services were held at the house Friday at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Peter Bock and Rev. E. Hansen both of Clarence. Interment was at Red Oak.
