17 June 1910 - The Lowden News

Ernst Broking was born at Frille Kreis Minden, Westphalia, Germany, on June 23, 1834. He died Sunday, June 12th, at 4 o'clock p.m. at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiese, four miles southwest of Lowden, after several months of sickness.

Mr. Broking was married in 1858. His wife died here in 1904. They having come to America in 1868, and by hard work and careful saving they were able to buy the farm, which Mr. Broking a few years ago sold to his son-in-law, Henry Wiese. For a number of years prior to Mrs. Broking's death, they had retired from active work on the farm and resided in Lowden and Mr. Broking has resided in their Lowden home since, up to Tuesday, June 7th, when they took him to Wiese's so that he might receive good care during his sickness. It was not thought that the end was so near, but infirmities of old age helped sickness to weaken his system and he passed quietly away Sunday afternoon, without much pain or suffering during his last hours, at the age of 75 years 11 months and 19 days.

Deceased was a prominent member of the Lowden Deutsche Krieger Verein. He having served in the Prussian army and took part in the Austria-Prussian war in 1866, as a "Landwehrmann." Mr. Broking was an honest and upright man, a good citizen, who had a great many friends.

There survive to mourn his demise one son, 4 daughters, also one step-son, 28 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a great many other near relatives.

Funeral occurred Wednesday afternoon. The remains had been brought in the morning from the Wiese home to Mr. Broking's home at Lowden, where a short service was held at 2 p.m. followed by services at the Evangelical church. Rev. Werning officiated. There was a long line of near relatives, a large number of the Krieger Verein members and their families and a great many friends from Lowden and vicinity and quite a few from Clarence, Bennett, Wheatland, Massillon and other towns. A number of beautiful floral pieces decorated the casket. The pall bearers were members of the Krieger Verein, namely, Comrades Fred Dircks, Fred Dienst, Geo. Fick, Chris Mohr, Louis Strackbein and Geo. Homrighausen, and they layed Mr. Broking to rest on the Van Horn cemetery. "Friede seiner Asche."
