18 March 1910 - The Lowden News

Mrs. Catharine Barlean died at the home of her son, Henry Barlean near Walker, Linn county, Iowa, on Saturday, March 12th, at the age of about eighty-seven years.

Deceased came with her husband, Wm. Barlean, from Ohio to Iowa in 1854 and settled near Lowden, and continually resided here until Mr. Barlean's death seven years ago last December. Since then Mother Barlean has resided here part of the time at her home two miles southwest of Lowden and part of the time she has been with her children. During the last several months of her life she resided with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barlean, who resided near Clarence up to March 1st, when they moved to near Walker. Mother Barlean had been quite sick since last Christmas, but she wished to go with her son and family when they moved. They made her trip comfortable for her, and she stood the same nicely. However, she was not permitted to reside very long at her new home, infirmities of old age and other complications closed the life's journey peacefully for a pleasant, kind and good old lady. There survive to mourn her demise two sons, two daughters, three step daughters, a number of grandchildren and many other near relatives.

The remains of Mother Barlean were brought to Lowden by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barlean, on Monday night, and funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with services at the M. E. church conducted by Rev. R. A. Basham. The pallbearers were Henry Moore, C. H. Hansen, David Kimball, Henry Busch, Fred Richmann and Charley Woebking. They layed Mother Barlean to rest beside her husband, in the Van Horn cemetery. May she rest in peace.
