6 January 1949 - The Tipton Advertiser

Cedar County Treasurer Jos. M. Blazek passed away suddenly at the hospital in Iowa City, the morning of New Year's day, 1949. Tipton community and the host of friends in Cedar county were shocked at the sad news, only a few having known that he had been at the hospital.

"Joe" Blazek, as he was familiarly known to most everyone here, had been a faithful public official, and highly esteemed resident of Tipton the past twenty-one years. In the many elections that his name appeared on the ballot for the office of county treasurer, he generally led the ticket in support received.

It is hard to realize that he has so suddenly slipped away, leaving all of us only the memory of his most friendly character.

Joseph Martin Blazek was born August 13, 1882, in Tama county, Iowa, and departed this life January 1,1949, at the age of 66 years, 4 months and 18 days.

In his boyhood, Joseph lived with his parents at Elberan. He attended Western college at Toledo, and later the University of Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Alma Coe on December 23, 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Blazek established their home in Cedar Rapids. Soon they moved to West Branch, where he was engaged in business for eighteen years. In 1928, Mr. Blazek was elected county treasurer of Cedar county. He served in this office until his death.

In young manhood he became a member of the Methodist church. He was a member of the local Masonic and Eastern Star orders. Mr. Blazek was always kind to his family and loved ones and very highly esteemed by his friends and neighbors.

Those preceding him in death are his father and mother.

Those he leaves to mourn his sudden departure include his wife, Mrs. Alma Blazek; his children, Joseph Laverne of Willow, Alaska, and Beatrice Lavilla Lukemyers of Tipton; his brothers, Emo F. Blazek of Maquoketa, Ia., and Milo D. Blazek of Marion, Ia.; his sisters, Mrs. Mame Schugart, of Jefferson, Wis.; Mrs. Emily McClellan of Miami, Florida; Mrs. Julius Schugart of Ames, Ia., Mrs. Leo Varns of Cedar Rapids, Ia. and Mrs. J. R. Timms of Council Bluffs, Ia.; one grandchild, seven nieces and nephews, and a host of cherished friends.

Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, January 4th, 1949, at 2:00 o'clock in the First Methodist Church, Tipton, conducted by the Rev. Leo G. Wolfe, pastor. Interment was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.
