3 November 1911 - The Lowden News

Wednesday afternoon the remains of Mrs. Fannie Andresen, nee Petersen, of Chicago, arrived here for burial, in the family lot on the Lowden cemetery.

Fannie Petersen was born on February 18th, 1844, at Hopdrup, Schleswig, Germany. In 1854 she came to America with her parents, Pastor and Mrs. Lorenz Petersen, whose youngest child she was. Upon their arrival in this country, the Petersen family settled here near Lowden. In 1862 Fannie Petersen was united in marriage with Herman Andresen. Mr. and Mrs. Andresen started their married life on a large farm they owned, east of Lowden; after a number of years farming the family resided in Lowden and later at Davenport until about nineteen years ago they took up their home permanently in Chicago, Ill.

Mrs. Andresen died at her home in Chicago on Sunday, October 29th, of heart trouble, at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 11 days, after only a few days sickness. Deceased besides many blessing and happiness received during her life, met also much sorrow, six times the Shadows of Death darkened her home, her husband died about seven years ago and five children preceded Mrs. Andresen to the better world.

There survive Mrs. Andresen to mourn her demise four children, six grandchildren, also three brothers and three sisters, and many other near relatives. Her children who survive her are: Mrs. Lulu Fuhrmann, of Munich, Germany, Hans, of Lowden and Miss Elsa and Fred, of Chicago, and Mrs. Andresen's surviving brothers and sisters are Emil Petersen, of Lowden, Julius and Herman Petersen, of Chicago, Mrs. Wm. F. Hahn, of Davenport and Mrs. Matthael and Mrs. Wm. Freund, of Chicago.

The funeral services were held in the Evangelical church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Werning not being at home, the services were conducted by Rev. Hansen of Clarence. The pallbearers were Fred Richmann, Wm. Klipp, Chas. Kreinbring, Wm. F. Richmann, Henry Hinrichs and Albert Schaefer. The funeral services were very impressive and a great many beautiful floral pieces, sweet tokens of last respects, had been brought by loving relatives and sympathizing friends, and the remains of Mrs. Andresen were laid to rest on the Lowden cemetery, near the remains of several of their children, on the pretty hill and quiet resting place of a great many of her other near relatives, friends and acquaintances.

Among the relatives from the distance present at the funeral were Miss Elsa Andresen, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Andresen and Herman Petersen of Chicago, Mrs. Wm. F. Hahn of Davenport and Mrs. F. L. Milton of Stanwood.

The period of time, during early childhood of Mrs. Andresen, effecting in particularly, her beautiful fatherland, termed the ""meernumschlungen" and her arrival here among the early settlers of Cedar county helped materially in making her life and her surroundings very eventful; and would inable one to bring an interesting historical sketch had we the time and room here. However, we can not help but to make this brief reference.

Her father as a stanch German, residing as it were in northern Schleswig naturally was in sympathy with the forces against Danish control and after the failure of the patriotic rise of the people, from 1848 to 1850 lost his position. This led him and family two years later to follow some of his older sons to America. However, after the war of 1866 when Schleswig-Holstein became a part of Prussia, Rev. Petersen received a pension of the Prussian government.

When Lorenz Petersen and family arrived in Cedar county, the parents and daughter Fannie took up their home with their oldest son, August Petersen, on his farm in Massillon township, northeast of Lowden.

When August Petersen died here last spring and was buried Easter Sunday in the Lowden cemetery, The Lowden News added to his obituary an historical sketch in reference to the early settlement and pioneer life in this vicinity, and the leading part which August Petersen and his brothers, Julius, Emil and Herman, took during the pioneer days. Many of our readers will, no doubt, remember that highly interesting sketch. We will now only add that Mrs. Andresen who was laid to rest here Wednesday, went through experiences of the early settlement in company of her said brothers.
